About the Playhouse
Sixty years ago a half dozen dedicated individuals formed a theater group which held its first performance in a church parish hall, and subsequently in the old
Civic Center on the site of the present City Library. The theater has evolved from these humble beginnings to its present day facility featuring an impressive plant
which seats an audience of 238 people.
The Playhouse is a non-profit cultural and educational organization which is administered by a Board of Governors. The Board hires the professional staff, which includes
the Artistic & Design Directors and the Executive Director, who is in charge of administration and sales as well as Box Office personnel. The Theater's policy of hiring
professionals who have extensive experience in inspiring and molding promising talent, has served to establish the enduring record it holds as one of the most successful
community theaters in the country.
Productions and Casting
Each production is the product of the involvement
of a diverse cross-section of community members represented by doctors, lawyers, businessmen, students, carpenters and writers of widely varying ages. Lighting and sound
effects, set construction and costuming are handled by willing and eager-to-learn volunteers. The By-Laws of The Playhouse prohibit any form of
compensation to its performers, all of whom are cast as a result of open auditions.
Benefactors and Contributors
The Theater is funded from ticket sales and membership contributions. From time to time,
donations are received from major benefactors, which help the Playhouse adhere to its strict policy of avoiding operating deficits.
Community Outreach Programs
In keeping with its
role as a serving member, the Playhouse has extended its community outreach
by presenting learning opportunities in acting and musical performance
instruction for all age groups. One such program
The Locomotion Theater provides interactive performances for
elementary school children several times each year.
