The first song ever heard in a Hollywood film was “Blue Skies” by Irving Berlin. Al Jolson sang it in Hollywood’s first sound film (THE JAZZ SINGER) in 1927. After that, Irving Berlin became Hollywood’s most popular songwriter, supplying songs for Fred Astaire (“Cheek to Cheek,” “Top Hat, White Tie and Tails”), Judy Garland (“A Couple of Swells”), Bing Crosby (“White Christmas”), and Rosemary Clooney (“Sisters”). In fact, whole films were conceived as vehicles for Berlin’s amazing catalog of classic songs, films like ALEXANDER’S RAGTIME BAND (with Alice Faye) and THERE’S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS (with Ethel Merman and Marilyn Monroe). America has been singing Irving Berlin’s songs for over a hundred years! We sing them for fun (“I Love a Piano”). We sing them during our holidays (“Easter Parade”). And when we’re feeling patriotic, we often sing an Irving Berlin song instead of our own National Anthem (“God Bless America”).
