“Listening to the jazz singer Gabrielle Stravelli is like imbibing a potent cocktail whose flavor changes as you drain the glass…As she dipped and swooped, twirling notes and phrases with a confidence and playfulness that recalled Ella Fitzgerald in her prime, Ms. Stravelli began interpreting lyrics with a ferocity that her vocal pyrotechnics accentuated.” -The New York Times
Award-winning vocalist and songwriter, Gabrielle Stravelli, has garnered critical acclaim and a loyal following through her rich sound, original compositions and her unique take on an array of material from the Great American Songbook, as well as by contemporary artists. A trained actor, Gabrielle has a soulful sensitivity for the story in the lyric and was called “a powerhouse of individual expression” by the Village Voice.
Gabrielle began singing professionally at age 15, as a soloist with the Orchestra of St. Peter by the Sea in New Jersey, and has since performed on stages from Azerbaijan to New York including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Birdland, The Jazz Standard, Cabaret 313 (Detroit), Nighttown (Cleveland), Vitello’s (LA) and multiple national music festivals – to name just a few.
In 2017, Gabrielle released her third album, “Dream Ago” which garnered raves from DownBeat Magazine, the Huffington Post and many others. DownBeat Magazine writes:
“Just when the shore of song seems lost for all the fog, the voice of Gabrielle Stravelli cuts through like a lighthouse of emotional integrity. Dream Ago spreads Stravelli’s talent into its full spectrum…the band flows wherever she goes, and we are nothing if not lucky to come along for the ride.” -DownBeat Magazine
Highlights of her work in recent years include touring the world as a United States Department of State “Jazz Ambassador,” headlining the 2018 WBGO Jazz on the Mountain Festival, and touring the US with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
Don’t miss this unforgettable evening of music, dedicated to the classic music of Johnny Mercer and Hoagy Carmichael – songs they wrote together in their 30-year collaboration, as well as works created with other legendary writers like Henry Mancini, Harold Arlen and Mitchell Parish. The show presents some of Mercer and Carmichael’s best-loved songs including “Skylark” and “In The Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening,” and more than a few lesser-known gems like “I Walk With Music,” “It Must Have Been You All the Time,” and some of the indelible standards they produced with other writers like “Stardust,” “That Old Black Magic,” and “Come Rain or Come Shine.” Stravelli will weave in fascinating stories of Mercer and Carmichael’s collaborations, from their big hits to their flop Broadway musicals, as well as a show-stopping medley of highlights from Johnny Mercer, a man who at the top of his career had a song in the Top Ten every week of the year.
