One of the most ambitious shows ever to have been staged at The Old Vic\, previews began on the 15th July. The official Opening Night on August 16th brought in a blizzard of rave 5 Star reviews. It was then released to theaters in South Florida on March 17\, 2006 and wider on August 4\, playing in six states: New York\, New Jersey\, Connecticut\, Missouri\, Arizona and California. The film’s working title was The Boynton Beach Bereavement Club.  The musical\, based on the film of the same name\, previously had two small\, invitation-only readings in New York. A concert version titled Boynton Beach Club: A New Musical In Concert was presented in February 2012 at the Park Vista Theatre in Lake Worth\, FL\, featuring a seasoned cast. Owen O’Neill and Dave Johns penned the play\, based on King’s 1983 novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption\, which examines the desperation and unlikely friendships shared by inmates in a maximum-security prison. The property is best known for its Oscar-nominated 1994 screen adaptation\, starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman.  The play had its world premiere at Dublin’s Gaiety Theatre in 2009. Kevin Anderson and Reg E. Cathey co-starred in the stage adaptation\, which transferred to the West End later that year.
