After establishing himself as a top-notch lyricist with WEST SIDE STORY and GYPSY, Stephen Sondheim created his first work as both lyricist and composer with this tribute to the classic Roman comedies of Plautus performed in a style that was part Vaudeville, part Burlesque and totally hilarious! Pseudolus is a slave who is determined to win his freedom.

To accomplish this, he employs every stratagem at his disposal to win the perfect mate for his master (Hero). It turns out that Hero’s “perfect mate” is a virginal young courtesan named Philia. This entails keeping the girl’s virtue safe from Hero’s lecherous father, a pompous Captain named Miles Gloriosus, Erronius (a doddering old man who’s afraid of ghosts) and Lycus, the proprietor of the local brothel.

Featuring such early Sondheim standards as “Comedy Tonight,” “Impossible,” “I’m Calm,” “That’ll Show Him,” “Pretty Little Picture” and “Everybody Ought to Have a Maid,” A FUNNY THING is a musical that truly lives up to its name!
