After providing the lyrics for two of Broadway’s biggest hits – WEST SIDE STORY and GYPSY – Stephen Sondheim assumed the dual role of both lyricist and composer for one award-winning musical after another, from A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM (“Comedy Tonight” and “Everybody Ought to Have a Maid”) to FOLLIES (“Broadway Baby” and “I’m Still Here”). His scores for shows like A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (“Send in the Clowns”), COMPANY (“The Ladies Who Lunch”), SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE (“Putting it Together”), SWEENEY TODD (“Not While I’m Around”), MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG (“Not a Day Goes By’) and INTO THE WOODS (“Children Will Listen”) are legendary. A Broadway composer with a record of eight Tony Awards, an Academy award and a Pulitzer Prize, we thought it was time that we pay our own tribute to the most celebrated composer of our time.
