When HELLO, DOLLY! broke records in its recent revival starring Bette Midler, playgoers in The Schubert Theater read in their Playbills that the musical was based on Thornton Wilder’s 1955 comedy THE MATCHMAKER. But the fact is that the true inspiration of the show dates all the way back to William Shakespeare! But don’t worry! The only classical material you’ll hear in this program are the classic show tunes of Jerry Herman as we reveal how one of our most popular musicals came into being!
We’ll celebrate Jerry Herman’s wonderful score which includes such Broadway favorites as “It Takes a Woman,” “Ribbons Down My Back,” “It Only Takes a Moment,” “Elegance,” “Before the Parade Passes By,” “So Long, Dearie” as well as the show’s popular title song. As a bonus, you’ll also hear songs from Herman’s other shows like MILK AND HONEY, MAME and LA CAGE AUX FOLLES.
