The history of Broadway boasts many legendary figures, but none were more colorful (or productive) than Billy Rose. He was a producer second only to Florenz Ziegfeld in the scale and lavishness of his productions in the palatial Hippodrome Theater. He was a songwriter who wrote almost as many hit songs as George Gershwin or Cole Porter. And (incidentally) he was the second husband of legendary “Funny Girl” Fanny Brice. As a songwriter, he co-wrote some of the most popular songs of the 1920’s and 30’s, including “A Cup of Coffee, a Sandwich and You,” “Me and My Shadow,” “Without a Song,” “More Than You Know,” “I’ve Got a Feeling I’m Falling” (which he wrote with Fats Waller) and “Tonight You Belong to Me.” He also authored such novelty classics as “Barney Google” and “Does Your Spearmint Loose It’s Flavor on the Bed-Post Overnight?”
