Neil Simon’s 1991 Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning play tells the story of a young father whose wife has recently died. He needs money to pay their medical bills and has an opportunity to earn a good salary working as a traveling salesman. But he has two young sons (Jay and Arty) to care for, so he brings them to his mother and asks her to take them in while he’s on the road.

Unfortunately for the boys, their grandmother is a very stern German woman who suffered terribly as a child in Europe before immigrating to America. As a result, she has no tolerance for “weakness” and she considers her son a weakling because he’s always suffered from poor health. But her daughter (Bella) persuades her to take the boys in. And so begins a summer the two boys will remember for the rest of their lives, living over a candy store with a woman who makes the Witch in “Hansel and Gretel” look like The Good Fairy.
