New Year’s Eve! Sentimental Journey: Remember the Songs of the Greatest Generation
December 31, 2017 @ 2:00 pm
One event on December 31, 2017 at 8:00 pm
Join us on New Year’s Eve to celebrate a time in our history when all Americans were united in sharing the same dream, featuring the songs of the greatest generation.
Today, when people speak of our “Great American Songbook”, they sometimes suggest that the songs in that “Songbook” are simply a collection of Top Ten song hits. Not so! The songs at the core of our “Songbook” are the songs that emerged from the period that defined our Greatest Generation, the years in which Americans who had withstood the challenges of the Depression went on to fight and win World War II.
The songs of this period literally bound our nation together, whether they were the Big Band songs introduced by Glenn Miller or the popular songs of longing, separation and hope written by Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael or Frank Loesser.
Join us on New Year’s Eve as we celebrate a time in our history when all Americans were united in sharing the same dream: to win the War and to bring our boys back home. You’ll hear songs made famous by such popular singers as Jo Stafford, Doris Day, Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters, songs like “I’ll Walk Alone”, “I’ll Be Seeing You”, “Seems Like Old Times”, “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To” and “It’s Been a Long, Long Time”.
