Harold Arlen wrote songs for the Broadway stage and for the Silver Screen for almost 40 years! Many of them are among the best-known songs in the history of American music…songs like “Stormy Weather,” “Blues in the Night,” “The Man That Got Away,” “I’ve Got a Right to Sing the Blues,” “Accentuate the Positive,” “I’ve Got the World on a String,” “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “That Old Black Magic” and Judy Garland’s iconic signature song, “Over the Rainbow.”
When Stephen Sondheim compiled a list of “The 100 Songs He Wishes He Had Written”, there were more songs on the list by Harold Arlen than by anyone else. And critic Steven Suskin writes: “His music remains ageless…and his songs are filled with never-ending wonder.”
From Jazz Clubs to Broadway to Hollywood, few composers have contributed more songs to the Great American Songbook than Harold Arlen.
