Irving Berlin and George Gershwin are often credited with popularizing jazz and ragtime music, but it was Jerome Kern who first introduced these modern musical forms to Broadway. Then (in 1927), he wrote SHOWBOAT, the first American Musical with a serious theme, creating a genre that would lead from Rodgers and Hammerstein to Stephen Sondheim to Lin Manuel Miranda.
Over the next two decades, his songs helped to enrich the Great American Songbook with songs like “Old Man River,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “They Didn’t Believe Me,” “Look For the Silver Lining,” “Lovely to Look At,” “The Last Time I Saw Paris” and “Long Ago and Far Away.”
You will agree that these songs (and others) by “The Father of the Broadway Musical” are as beautiful and moving today as the were the day he wrote them.
