American protest songs can be traced back to the early 1700s but the mid-to-late 1900s began a golden age with songs related to multiple social issues by artists like Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Marvin Gaye, CSNY, PPM, Buffalo Springfield, Barry McGuire, Phil Ochs, and even Paul Simon, Helen Reddy, and the Beatles, among others. This program discusses and performs popular protest songs from the past and explores their potential application to today’s issues. Discussions are supported with stimulating slides while lyrics to songs are projected for a nostalgic and motivating sing-along!
