George “Tony” Allerton was a longtime leader in Delray Beach. He was a tireless advocate for the recovery community having founded the Crossroads Club and sponsored numerous awareness and fundraising activities. Equally impactful was his leadership at the Delray Beach Playhouse. Tony began volunteering and “treading the boards” at the DBP beginning in 1958 appearing in such productions as Stalag 13, A Thousand Clowns and The Rainmaker. However, Tony’s greatest contributions were in his roles as Board member and frequent President over the past 50 years. He spearheaded the three major renovations and additions to the existing facility, expanded programs to include children and young adult theater training and initiated professional management that ensured the continued financial and cultural success of the DBP. His calm and consistent presence, commitment and dedication to the Playhouse will be sadly missed by the many people he touched, encouraged and mentored.
